Before the Japanse Wajin settled in Hokkaido, the island was home to the indigenous Ainu. The Ainu were hunters, and the large numbers of salmon which thrive in the rivers of Hokkaido was their main staple. When the Wajin came to Hokkaido and divided up the land the hunting lifestyle of the Ainu underwent a complete change. Their lifestyle was harmonious with nature and those responsible for destroying nature today have a lot to learn about the Ainu way of thinking. The Northern People’s Museum is a museum dedicated to the Ainu and exhibits items collected by two native Ainu. For those interested in indigenous peoples this is a museum that mustn’t be missed.
